Stablecoin Finance: Y Combinator RFS Lessons for Founders

  1. aigi

Stablecoin finance is no longer just a crypto infrastructure theme. It is a practical startup category spanning cross-border payments, treasury management, remittances, settlement, embedded finance, and programmable payouts. For Indian founders, the opportunity is substantial—but so are the regulatory, banking, security, and distribution constraints.

Y Combinator’s Summer 2024 Request for Startups (RFS) highlighted stablecoin finance as an area worth exploring. That application cycle is closed, and founders should not treat the old deadline or terms as current. The useful takeaway is the underlying question: Can your company make money movement materially faster, cheaper, safer, or more accessible using stablecoins?

What stablecoin finance means for a startup

A stablecoin is a blockchain-based token designed to track the value of an asset, usually a fiat currency such as the US dollar. Depending on its design, it may be backed by cash and short-term government securities, crypto collateral, or an algorithmic mechanism. These models carry different risks, so a startup must explain exactly what it uses and who bears the risk.

The strongest businesses usually do not begin by issuing a new stablecoin. They build products around existing, liquid assets and solve a specific operational problem:

    • Cross-border settlement: Reduce delays for exporters, freelancers, marketplaces, and global software businesses.
    • Treasury operations: Help companies hold, convert, reconcile, and report digital-dollar balances.
    • Payout infrastructure: Enable faster payments to contractors, creators, suppliers, or users.
    • Merchant acceptance: Provide compliant checkout, invoicing, and conversion tools.
    • Compliance and risk: Screen wallets, monitor transactions, and produce audit-ready records.
    • Developer infrastructure: Offer APIs, wallets, reconciliation, or payment orchestration.

A pitch that says “stablecoins will replace banks” is weak. A pitch that shows a defined customer, an expensive workflow, measurable savings, and a compliant route to market is investable.

What YC’s RFS signal means in 2026

The 2024 RFS should be read as a directional signal, not as a current funding programme. YC evaluates companies through its active application process and publishes current batches, deadlines, and terms on its official channels. Do not reuse an old deadline, funding figure, or eligibility claim without checking the latest information.

The durable lesson is that YC tends to favour large markets approached through a narrow wedge. For example, “stablecoin payments for everyone” is broad. “Automated USDC settlement and GST-ready reconciliation for Indian SaaS exporters” is easier to test, explain, and sell.

Your application should answer four questions quickly:

    1. Who is the first paying customer? Name the segment, not just “businesses.”
    2. What fails today? Quantify fees, settlement time, payment failures, fraud, or reconciliation effort.
    3. Why are you suited to solve it? Show domain access, technical expertise, or proprietary distribution.
    4. What has changed? Include pilots, transaction volume, retention, revenue, waitlist quality, or strong customer evidence.

    India-specific product and compliance work

India-based founders need to separate the technology layer from the regulated financial activity. A blockchain transfer may be technically simple, but onboarding, foreign exchange, taxation, custody, KYC, anti-money-laundering controls, consumer protection, and banking relationships can determine whether the business is viable.

    Before launching, document:

    • The jurisdictions in which you operate and the customers you serve.
    • Whether you custody funds, facilitate conversion, transmit value, or merely provide software.
    • Your KYC, sanctions screening, transaction monitoring, suspicious-activity escalation, and record-keeping process.
    • How customer assets are segregated and what happens during a chain outage, depeg, freeze, or partner failure.
    • Your tax, accounting, and reporting workflow for customers.
    • The licensed entities and legal advisers responsible for regulated steps.

Do not present a compliance gap as a growth strategy. If the product depends on a partner, name the partner type and define responsibilities. A credible “software plus regulated-partner” model is more persuasive than an unexplained promise of instant global payments.

    Build an investable MVP

A useful MVP should prove a workflow, not merely display a token balance. Choose one transaction path and instrument it end to end:

    • Customer onboarding and business verification.
    • Quote, wallet, bank, or payment initiation.
    • Stablecoin transfer and confirmation handling.
    • Conversion or settlement through an appropriate partner.
    • Reconciliation against invoices, orders, or payouts.
    • Exception handling for failed, delayed, or flagged transactions.
    • Customer support and downloadable records.

Track the metrics that expose whether the product works: settlement time, total cost per transaction, payment success rate, compliance-review rate, gross margin, repeat usage, and net revenue retention. Security should be visible from the beginning. Use least-privilege access, key-management controls, audit logs, rate limits, address allowlists where appropriate, and independent reviews before handling meaningful value.

Your broader architecture can also benefit from disciplined startup engineering. See this 2026 guide to choosing a tech stack for AI startups for practical thinking on infrastructure, observability, and cost control. If you add transaction-risk models or support automation, treat them as assistive systems with review paths—not as substitutes for financial controls.

How to make the YC application stronger

YC applications reward clarity. Keep the product description concrete and lead with customer pain. A strong answer might explain that Indian exporters wait several days for a cross-border settlement, lose a defined percentage to fees and FX spreads, and spend hours reconciling receipts. Then show how your product improves those numbers.

    Include:

    • A short product demo showing the complete user journey.
    • Founder ownership: who built the protocol, compliance layer, integrations, and sales motion.
    • Customer evidence, including paid pilots and usage frequency—not only partnership logos.
    • A precise business model: transaction fee, SaaS fee, spread, API usage, or a combination.
    • A risk register covering depegging, chain congestion, fraud, custody, regulation, and counterparty exposure.
    • A 12-month plan tied to measurable milestones.

If your team is early or still validating the idea, study the principles in this guide to getting funding for student AI startups in India: start with a narrow proof point, show execution, and use grants or pilots to reduce risk before raising a large round.

    Distribution is the real moat

Stablecoin infrastructure is increasingly commoditised. Your defensibility may instead come from distribution, trusted integrations, proprietary compliance data, local workflow knowledge, or deep expertise in a regulated customer segment. Partnerships with accounting platforms, exporters’ associations, fintechs, payroll providers, and global marketplaces can be more valuable than another wallet feature.

For internal operations, automate only where the controls are clear. The principles in AI workflow automation for high-growth startups apply well to reconciliation, support triage, and reporting, but every automated action involving funds or account access needs approval rules and an audit trail.

    Founder checklist

Before applying or approaching investors, confirm that you can answer yes to most of these questions:

    • Can we describe one customer and one painful workflow in one sentence?
    • Have real users completed transactions or paid for a pilot?
    • Can we calculate total cost and margin per transaction?
    • Do we know which activities require licensed or regulated partners?
    • Can we explain what happens during a depeg, outage, fraud event, or account freeze?
    • Is our custody, key management, and incident-response design documented?
    • Do we have a distribution advantage beyond “the market is growing”?
    • Are our current application facts checked against YC’s official information?

Stablecoin finance remains a promising startup category, but the winning companies will look less like speculative token projects and more like dependable financial infrastructure. Build around a painful use case, prove the economics, design compliance into the product, and show why your India-market insight can translate into a global business.
